About the Alameda County Superior Court

The Alameda County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, has jurisdiction over Alameda County and is one of the 58 Superior Courts in the state of California. Alameda County is home to over 1.6 million people living in 14 incorporated cities, six unincorporated communities, and various rural areas. The county has an area of 813 square miles, making it the seventh largest county in California.

In its mission statement, the Alameda County Superior Court states that it shall “fairly and efficiently resolve disputes arising under the law and shall apply the law consistently, impartially, and independently to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitutions of California and the United States. The employees of the Court shall strive for service excellence and, through their dedication and professionalism, implement the policies and procedures established by the judiciary and legislature. The judges and employees are committed to ensuring equal access to court services and enhancing public confidence in the court system.”

In order to serve its population and achieve its mission, the Superior Court of Alameda County is divided into the following eight divisions: Civil, Family, Criminal, Juvenile, Probate, Small Claims, Traffic, and Collaborative Courts Divisions.

The Court operates out of ten separate locations.

The East County Hall of Justice of the Alameda County Superior Court handles criminal and traffic matters and is located at 5151 Gleason Drive, Dublin, CA 94568. The Fremont Hall of Justice, located at 39439 Paseo Padre Parkway, Fremont, CA 94538, also handles criminal and traffic matters and can be reached by calling (510) 818-7500. The Administration Building at 1221 Oak Street, Oakland, CA 94612, houses the Civil Division. The Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse, which is located at 661 Washington Street, Oakland, CA 94607, handles civil and traffic matters and can be reached by calling (510) 627-4700. The John George Psychiatric Pavilion handles mental health cases and is located at 2060 Fairmont Drive, San Leandro, CA 94578. The Alameda County Superior Court Divisions

Civil Division

The Civil Division hears non-criminal cases that are not family, juvenile, or probate cases. The Civil Division encourages the use of Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) to resolve disputes between the parties.

Small Claims Division

The Small Claims Division of the Alameda County Superior Court operates a special Small Claims Court where you can resolve disputes quickly and inexpensively.

This court allows you to sue a person, business, or government agency that you think owes you money. Generally, you can only sue for up to $10,000 in small claims court (or up to $5,000 if you’re a business). You can ask a lawyer for advice before you go to court, but you can't have one with you in court.

Family Law Court Division

The Family Law Court hears cases involving divorce, legal separation, nullity, paternity, domestic violence, child custody, visitation, and support matters.

Probate Court Division

The Probate Court Division of the Alameda Superior Court handles matters concerning the appointment of personal representatives, distribution of estates, petitions regarding trust administration, review and accounting of guardians and conservators, disputes about wills, trusts, and powers of attorney.

Criminal Court Division

The Criminal Court Division handles all the matters of ​​infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies.

Juvenile Court Division

The Juvenile Court focuses on two types of cases involving children under the age of 18: Juvenile Dependency matters, which are cases relating to the abuse and/or neglect of a minor; and Juvenile Delinquency matters, which are cases involving violations of criminal laws by a minor.

The Traffic Court hears matters involving infractions, misdemeanors, mandatory appearance, and Proof of Correction (POC).

Collaborative Courts Division

The Collaborative Courts Division helps people with drug, alcohol, and co-occurring conditions. The goal of this court is for participants to enter treatment programs and exit the justice system. Agencies that work with this division are committed to providing legal relief for people struggling with addiction and related issues.
