About the Southern District of Indiana

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana was initially part of the U.S. District Court for the District of Indiana, which was established in 1817. The District Court was split into the Northern and Southern Districts in 1928.

The S.D. Ind. has jurisdiction over the following counties: Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Crawford, Daviess, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Dubois, Fayette, Floyd, Fountain, Franklin, Gibson, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Harrison, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Ohio, Orange, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Scott, Shelby, Spencer, Sullivan, Switzerland, Tipton, Union, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, Warrick, Washington, and Wayne.

The Southern District of Indiana Court currently has five United States District Judges, four full-time United States Magistrate Judges, and two part-time Magistrate Judges.

The Southern District is organized into four divisions: the Indianapolis Division, the Terre Haute Division, the Evansville Division, and the New Albany Division. The Indianapolis Division includes Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Clinton, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Fountain, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Randolf, Rush, Shelby, Tipton, Union, and Wayne counties. The Terre Haute Division covers Clay, Greene, Knox, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties. The Evansville Division includes Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Martin, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties. The New Albany Division serves Clark, Crawford, Dearborn, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Lawrence, Ohio, Orange, Ripley, Scott, Switzerland, and Washington counties.

The S.D. Ind. has a courthouse located in each division.

The Indianapolis Division is located in the Birch Bayh Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse at 46 East Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.

The address for the Terre Haute Division is: U.S. Courthouse, 921 Ohio St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

The Evansville Division operates out of the Winfield K. Denton Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse, located at 101 Northwest Martin Luther King Blvd., Evansville, IN 47708.

The New Albany Division is housed in the Lee H. Hamilton Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse at 121 West Spring St., New Albany, IN 47150.
