As a part of UniCourt’s mission to improve access to court data, we’re dedicated to making the data the legal industry needs more easily available via our Legal Data APIs, so legal professionals can transform their business development initiatives, competitive intelligence gathering, legal analytics development, and legal recruiting.
We’re excited to share that UniCourt’s partnership with Above the Law to supply litigation intelligence for their Law Firm Transparency Directory has carried on into 2022.
Above the Law’s initial release of the Transparency Directory included 50 of the most recognizable law firms in the U.S. legal market, and in an effort to expand the Transparency Directory’s reach, they have added another 50 firms, for a combined total of 100 firms.
In this blog post, we’ll share which new law firms made the cut in the latest round of additions to the Transparency Directory and give you a sneak peak at the data UniCourt provided Above the Law, along with some bonus data points. We’ll also touch on how law firms, legal recruiters, legal tech companies, and others in the legal industry are using UniCourt’s Legal Data as a Service (LDaaS) to gain a competitive edge in the legal marketplace.

Litigation Intelligence on Law Firms, Attorneys, and Corporate Clients
As a continuation of our initial contribution to the Law Firm Transparency Directory, UniCourt has provided Above the Law with litigation intelligence for each of the new 50 law firms added to the Transparency Directory, as well as updated intelligence on the first 50 firms included in the inaugural release.
For each of these law firms, we provided their top three (1) most common federal case types, (2) most active federal jurisdictions, and (3) most frequent federal litigation clients for all U.S. District Courts in 2021.
To give you a snapshot of the data you can now access in the Law Firm Transparency Directory, we’ve included here below an expanded view of the litigation profiles for Jones Day and Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. As a bonus, we’ve also included a list of the top 10 federal litigators by case count for each firm.

Gaining Deeper Insights from Litigation Intelligence
UniCourt makes litigation intelligence easily available through our APIs as a part of our Legal Data as a Service because we want to ensure that legal professionals can seamlessly access the data they need within their own applications and databases.
With API access to legal data, you can push it into data visualization tools to generate dynamic dashboards. You can build intranet sites filled with regularly updated data feeds and litigation leaderboards. You can create self-service reporting tools and empower your professionals with the data they need right at their fingertips.
So you might be asking, what are some of the real-world use cases for API access to litigation intelligence? Here are a handful of the ways our clients are using litigation intelligence in the legal industry.
Business Development
- Find new clients and business opportunities previously hidden within the billions of court data points you can now easily sift through with our APIs.
- Be the first to know when your clients are involved in new litigation and get real-time updates when cases reach critical stages.
- Push data directly into your CRM, client experience portal, or matter management system and create automated workflows to boost the productivity of business development teams and law firm relationship partners.
Competitive Intelligence
- Capture litigation snapshots of your top clients to see who they’re hiring, quantify your business opportunities, and create market share analysis reports.
- Dig deeper into your top competitors to see who they’re working for and develop data driven benchmarking against your peer firms.
- Spot litigation trends impacting your most important revenue streams and continuously monitor what’s happening in your core practice areas to better position for the future.
Legal Analytics
- Gain deeper insights by mixing litigation data with your financial data, internal settlements data, and other proprietary data sets.
- Build your own practice-specific litigation analytics and stop relying on blackbox analytics without verifying the underlying data.
- Short circuit the time needed to develop analytics products by taking advantage of bulk API access to data and our entity normalization of law firms, attorneys, corporate clients, and judges.
Legal Recruiting
- Leverage normalized attorney data to find lateral candidates with a strong book of business and real courtroom experience.
- Easily ask and answer the questions you care about without the song and dance of traditional recruiting: Who are their clients? What are their real practice areas? Do they move from firm to firm often? Do their clients follow them to new firms?
- Grow your client base, invigorate your litigation practice groups, and expand your presence geographically by focusing on the facts and finding candidates that fit your practice groups.
As a leader in API development for court data, UniCourt supports the core data needs our clients have for a wide-range of use cases beyond the four we’ve outlined above, including case research, investigations, underwriting, machine learning models, news reporting, and much more.
