About the San Mateo County Superior Court

The San Mateo County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, is one of the 58 unified trial courts in California and has jurisdiction over all of San Mateo County. The San Mateo County Superior Court serves more than 737,000 people who reside across the approximately 744 square miles that make up the county.

The mission of this court is “to apply the law fairly to protect individual freedom, and to promote the welfare of the people.”

In order to fulfill its mission, the San Mateo County Superior Court operates the following fifteen divisions out of four locations: Dispute Resolution, Civil, Complex Civil Litigation, Criminal, Family Law, Family Court Services, Grand Jury, Juror Servicers, Juvenile, Probate, Record Management, Court Reporters, Small Claims, and Traffic.

The Southern Branch of the San Mateo County Superior Court is located in the Hall of Justice and Records at 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063. It houses the Executive Officer/Clerk, Jury Commissioner, and Administration as well as the Criminal, Civil, Family Law, Jury, Family Law Facilitators, Probate, Records Management, and Small Claims divisions.

The other courthouses are: the Northern Branch at 1050 Mission Road, South San Francisco, CA 94080; the Juvenile Branch at 222 Paul Scannell Drive, San Mateo, CA 94402; and the Central Branch at 800 North Humboldt Street, San Mateo, CA 9440.

San Mateo County Superior Court Divisions

Dispute Resolution (ADR) Division

The ADR Division of the San Mateo County Superior Court aids in resolving legal disputes between the parties involved in a case.

Civil Division

The Civil Division handles lawsuits among individuals and/or corporations. The Civil Division conducts civil trials and manages civil filings, case management, name and/or gender changes, and civil restraining orders.

Criminal Division

The Criminal Division deals with criminal cases, such as felonies and misdemeanors.

Family Law Division

The Family Law Division of the San Mateo County Superior Court handles cases relating to divorce or separation, child custody, child support, and domestic violence. The Family Law Division primarily accepts all filings electronically. However, cases may be heard in person on the 1st floor of the Southern Branch location.

Family Court Services Division

The San Mateo Superior Court Family Court Services Division hears disputes about child custody and visitation.

Civil Grand Jury Division

The Civil Grand Jury of the San Mateo County Superior Court is a judicial body composed of 19 citizens. It is impaneled to act as an "arm of the court," as authorized by the State Constitution, and to be a voice of the people and conscience of the community.

Interpreter Services Division

The Interpreter Services Division provides interpreters and other language services to people with limited English ability so that they can understand and participate in the court process.

Juror Services Division

Juvenile Division

The Juvenile Division of the San Mateo Superior Court handles the following four types of cases involving minors: delinquency, dependency, adoptions, and emancipation.

The Record Management Division is responsible for file viewing and obtaining copies of court case records relating to civil, family law, probate, or unlimited criminal cases.

Small Claims Division

The Small Claim Division of the San Mateo County Superior Court handles small claim cases. This division is a special court in which disputes are resolved inexpensively, and quickly.

Traffic Division

The Traffic Division handles cases relating to traffic laws, including vehicle code infractions, municipal code infractions, and county ordinances.
