About Queens County Court

Queens County is co-extensive with Queens Borough, and it is the second largest borough of New York City, located on Long Island with an area of 109 sq. mt., and is. With a population of around 2.4 million residents, it is the second most populous borough of New York City. Queens also happens to be considered the most linguistically diverse place in the world and is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States.

The structure of the county court in Queens County is similar to the county-level courts in other boroughs of New York City. It is comprised of a Supreme Court, which, unlike its name may otherwise imply, is a trial court of unlimited original jurisdiction. The Queens County Supreme Court generally hears cases that are outside the jurisdiction of other trial courts of more limited jurisdiction, and has two branches: a Civil Term and a Criminal Term.

The 11th District of the New York Supreme Court serves all of Queens County, and is one of the thirteen Judicial Districts in the state of New York. It also represents one of the five Judicial Districts that form New York City

Queens County Supreme Court

The Queens County Supreme Court is a trial court of broad unlimited original jurisdiction, however, it typically hears cases that are outside the limited jurisdiction of other trial courts operating in Queens County. The Supreme Court exercises civil jurisdiction in cases with monetary value exceeding $25,000 and criminal jurisdiction over felony cases in which a sentence in excess of one year may be imposed. Cases involving a lower monetary value or misdemeanor charges are managed by City Civil and Criminal Courts.

Supreme Court Civil Term

The Queens County Supreme Court Civil Term has locations in Jamaica as well as Long Island City. The Jamaica Courthouse is located at 88-11 Sutphin Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11435, and can be reached by calling (718) 298-1150. The Jamaica Courthouse was built in 1936, and it currently houses the Supreme Court, Surrogate’s Court and County Clerk. It was originally called the Queens General Court.

The Queens County Supreme Court Civil Term courthouse in Long Island is located at 25-10 Court Square, Long Island City, NY 11101, and can be reached by calling (718) 298-1150. The location of the Long Island City Courthouse was decided as the Queens County Seat moved from Jamaica to Long Island City, due to better access to public transportation.

The Long Island City Courthouse was originally built in 1874 and was designed by architect George Hathorne. It was remodeled and enlarged by Peter M. Coco in 1904, and was considered to be one of the most important buildings in Queens County. The complex of the Long Island City Courthouse was designated as a New York City landmark in 1976 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.

The Queens County Supreme Civil Term is composed of specialized departments that help the court run smoothly. These departments include Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Mental Health Part, Commercial Division, and Matrimonial (Divorce). Here are some of the other special departments and their functions:

  1. Court Help: This office provides free comprehensive procedural advice on Supreme Court matters to unrepresented litigants. You can reach Court Help by calling (718) 298-1024, or by sending an email to courthelpqueens@nycourts.gov.
  2. E-File: The New York State Unified Court System has established “NYSCEF,” a program that permits the filing of legal papers by electronic means with the County Clerk and the court, as well as electronic service of papers in those cases.
  3. Ex-Parte: This office accepts all emergency applications, where it is important for the party to see a judge immediately and it also processes ex-parte applications, which are proceedings where only one side is heard.
  4. Foreclosure: New legislation requires residential foreclosure conferences for nearly all foreclosures in New York State. Those conferences are scheduled here.
  5. Guardianship: Handles elder law matters that come under the Mental Hygiene Law, which was created to help those who can no longer help themselves.
  6. Motion Support: Processes notices of motions, notices of petitions, requests for preliminary conferences and proposed orders and judgments as a result of a memorandum issued through motion practice.

The mission of the Queens County Supreme Court Criminal Term, is “to promote the efficient administration of justice and provide the public with fair and expeditious resolution of all matters.”

The Queens County Supreme Court Criminal Term is located at 125-01 Queens Blvd., Kew Gardens, NY 11415. You can reach the Criminal Term by calling (718) 298-1408. The Hon. Donna-Marie E. Golia is the Administrative Judge of Queens County Supreme Criminal Term and William Reyes is the Chief Clerk.
