About the Contra County Superior Court

The Contra Costa County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of Contra Costa, has jurisdiction over Contra Costa County, which contains a population of over one million residents within its 716 square miles. This county is one of the 27 original counties established in California in 1850.

The Superior Court of Contra Costa County is one of the 58 unified trial courts in the state of California, and currently has 48 judges, who hear cases in courthouses throughout the county.

Contra Costa Superior Court Departments

Civil Department

The Civil Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court handles cases related to civil discovery, civil harassment, and complex litigation. Civil lawsuits in the Contra Costa Superior Court are divided into one of three categories, depending on the amount of money involved in the matter. Cases involving sums under $10,000 are small claims cases, sums between $1 to $25,000 are civil cases with limited jurisdiction, and sums over $25,000 are unlimited jurisdiction civil cases.

Criminal Department

The Criminal Department runs the Felony & Misdemeanor Court, which hears matters involving felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions.

All criminal matters are processed and heard at the A.F. Bray Courthouse or the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse. You can reach the Criminal Division by calling (925) 608-1000 and then dialing Extension Code 6.

Family and Children Department

The  Contra Costa County Superior Court Family and Children Department handles cases involving divorce, legal separation, annulment, nullity, establishing parentage, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, family support, marital property division, domestic violence, and restraining orders.

This department operates out of the Spinetta Family Law Center, which can be reached by calling (925) 608-1000 and dialing Extension Code 3.

Jury Service Department

The Jury Service Department is responsible for providing the Courts with qualified jurors from the community.

The Jury Service Office is located at the A.F. Bray Courthouse, which can be reached by calling (925) 608-1000 and dialing Extension Code 1, or faxing (925) 608-2457.

Juvenile Department

The Juvenile Department manages the Juvenile Justice Court, which handles cases related to juvenile status offenses concerning noncriminal behaviors that are illegal because of the child's age, juvenile delinquencies, and juvenile dependency.

This Department operates out of the Walnut Creek Courthouse. You can reach the Juvenile Department Clerk by calling (925) 608-1000, and then dialing Extension Code 7.

Probate Department

The Probate Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court supervises the distribution of assets and the payment of debts after the death of a person. It handles matters related to estates, wills, trusts, conservatorships, and guardianships.

This department operates out of the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse. You can reach the Probate Division by calling (925) 608-2613.

Small Claims Department

This department includes the Small Claims Court, which hears cases where the monetary claim does not exceed $10,000 for a natural person and $5,000 for a corporation, limited liability company, or a partnership.

The Small Claims Department operates out of the George D. Carroll Courthouse and can be reached by calling (925) 608-1000 and dialing Extension Code 5.

Appellate Department

The Appellate Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court hears appeals arising from unlimited civil cases; criminal appeals that arise from felonies or misdemeanors; criminal traffic appeals; and juvenile appeals.

Most appeals are limited to a review of the record from the lower court. Parties cannot introduce new evidence, but are limited to what was said and introduced at the original trial.

Traffic Department

The Traffic Department, which runs the Traffic Court, deals with cases related to traffic, including violations, bail, and fines.

The Traffic Department operates out of the George D. Carroll Courthouse, the Walnut Creek Courthouse, and the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center. You can reach the Traffic Department by calling (925) 608-1000 and dialing Extension Code 2.

Landlord/Tenant Department

The Landlord/Tenant Department of the Superior Court deals with matters related to unlawful detainers or evictions and other disputes between landlords and tenants.

This department is housed in the George D. Carroll Courthouse and can be reached via the Self-Help Center by calling (925) 608-2128.

Restraining Orders Department

The Restraining Orders Department deals with matters relating to restraining orders, and because there are many types of restraining orders, matters are handled at two separate locations.

Domestic violence restraining orders, are handled at the Spinetta Family Courthouse. Restraining orders for issues relating to elder abuse, workplace violence, or civil harassment are handled at the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse.

  1. The Contra Costa County Superior Court Courthouse was built in 1932 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
