About the Butte County Superior Court

The Butte County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of Butte, has jurisdiction over Butte County, one of the original twenty-seven counties in California. It serves approximately 208,300 residents who live and work across the county’s 1,676  square miles.

The Court states that its mission is “to create a court environment deserving of community respect by resolving disputes according to law; ensuring and protecting peoples' rights; taking a leadership role in preserving order in society; and providing exceptional, accessible and fair justice services to all.”

The Butte County Superior Court is divided into six divisions including civil, criminal, family law, family court services, juvenile, and traffic courts. Currently, the Butte County Superior Court has eleven judges, two commissioners, and about 100 employees.

The Court operates out of two separate locations. The North Butte County Courthouse of the Butte County Superior Court is located at 1775 Concord Avenue, Chico, CA 95928, and can be reached by calling (530) 532-7009. This courthouse is a full-service, five-courtroom courthouse in the greater Chico area. The North Butte County Courthouse handles civil, probate, traffic, family law, and juvenile dependency cases.

The Butte County Courthouse is located at One Court Street, Oroville, CA 95965, and can be reached by calling (530) 532-7002. This courthouse handles criminal, juvenile, mental health cases, appeals, and family law cases as well as jury selection for criminal cases.

The Presiding Judge for the Butte County Superior Court is the Hon. Kimberly Merrifield.

Butte County Superior Court Divisions

Civil/Probate Division

The Civil/Probate Division of the Butte County Superior Court is located at the North Butte County Courthouse. It handles all civil matters, including small claims, unlawful detainer, and limited and unlimited civil cases. This division also handles probate matters, including estate, guardianship, trust, and conservatorship cases for the whole county.

Criminal Division

The Criminal Division handles criminal misdemeanor and felony matters for the entire county. It also handles cases that are specified penal code infraction matters.

Family Law Division

The Family Law Division hears all family law matters, including the dissolution of marriage, legal separation, nullity, paternity, and summary dissolution. This division also hears the related issues of child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and community property.

Juvenile Division

The Juvenile Division of the Butte County Superior Court deals with matters involving juvenile delinquency, juvenile dependency, adoptions, and juvenile traffic violations. This division also handles any other types of juvenile infraction cases for the entire county.

  1. The Butte County Superior Court was established in the early 1850s, not long after California achieved statehood.
  2. The County seat is Oroville, where the Butte County Courthouse is located.
  3. The Butte County Superior Court has been impacted by natural disasters in recent years, including the Camp Fire in 2018, which destroyed the court's Chico facility.
