A contract is a legally binding agreement between natural persons or legal entities, where one party commits to provide services or deliver goods in exchange for valuable consideration. The contract defines the terms of the relationship and ensures mutual understanding among the parties. A contract lawsuit is a legal action taken when a party to a contract fails to uphold their obligations. Parties may also file a declaratory action when they anticipate a breach of contract and want the court to define their rights and obligations in advance of an issue arising. There are many types of contract cases, including debt collection, Miller Act, professional negligence, student loan collection, business governance, security, and insurance cases.

In 2021, the U.S. District Courts saw 26,481 cases filed. In 2022, the number of contract cases increased to 30,538. Many types of contract cases were filed in the U.S. District Courts during these years, such as Miller Act, product liability, marine, student loan collection, debt collection, franchise, insurance, and security cases.

In 2022, the top five Plaintiff’s Attorneys for contract cases in the U.S. District Courts were Richard W. Huye III, Claude F. Reynaud, Jr., Cameron S. Snowden, and Grant P. Gardiner of McClenny Moseley & Associates PLLC; and Rajan Pandit of Pandit Law Firm LLC.

In 2022, the top five Defense Attorneys for contract cases were V. Ed Mcguire III and Christopher P. Leyoub of Plauche Smith & Nieset; H. Minor Pipes III of Pipes Miles Beckman, LLC; and Emily S. Morrison and Eleanor W. Wall of Porteous, Hainkel & Johnson.
