About the Southern District of New York

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York has jurisdiction over Bronx, Westchester, Rockland, New York, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, and Sullivan counties. The Court hears cases in Manhattan, White Plains, and Poughkeepsie, New York and held its first session in November 1789 in Manhattan, presided over by Judge James Duane, who was appointed by President Washington. The Southern District, also known as the “Sovereign District of New York” for its reputation as a highly independent and nonpartisan court, was the first court to sit under the new U.S. Constitution, preceding the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Southern District currently has forty-four United States District Judges and fifteen United States Magistrate Judges, who preside over the highest civil caseload in the country. Several notable figures have served as Judges of the Southern District, including Justice Sonia Sotomayor, former Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson, Sr., former Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey, and former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh. According to the Court’s Welcome Statement, “the judges of this Court strive everyday to continue the tradition of treating each case, its litigants, and advocates with respect and dignity and to see that justice is done in each and every case in accordance with the law.”

Brieant Jr. Federal Building and Courthouse at 300 Quarropas Street, White Plains, NY 10601; the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse at 40 Foley Square, New York, NY 10007; and the United States Courthouse at 355 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
