About the Northern District of New York

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York has jurisdiction over Albany, Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, St. Lawrence, Tioga, Tompkins, Ulster, Warren, and Washington counties. The Northern District is a successor to the original District of New York, which was broken into Northern and Southern Districts in 1814. In 1900, the Northern District was again split to form the Western District of New York.

The Northern District currently has ten United States District Judges and seven United States Magistrate Judges. In their mission statement, the Court states, “The mission of the Clerk's Office of the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York is to provide administrative and case management support to the Court and to serve the public in a professional, timely and efficient manner. We are committed to supporting the legal process and the just resolution of legal proceedings within the jurisdiction of the Court. We are dedicated to the fair and impartial administration of justice and shall strive to accomplish our mission by ensuring that everyone within our organization and those who use it are afforded high quality service and treated in a courteous and respectful manner."

Foley U.S. Courthouse at 445 Broadway, Suite 509, Albany, NY 12207; the Binghamton U.S. Courthouse at 15 Henry St., Binghamton, NY 13901; the Gateway Building U.S. Courthouse at 14 Durkee St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901; the James M. Hanley Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 100 S. Clinton St., Syracuse, NY 1326; and the Alexander Pirnie Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 10 Broad St., Utica, NY 13501.
