About the Central District of Illinois

The U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois has jurisdiction over forty-six counties in the heart of the state. In 1819, the U.S. Congress established the District of Illinois by statute, establishing one large district across Illinois. In 1855, the District was divided into a Northern and Southern District. In 1905, an Eastern District was established. However, the Eastern District was reorganized and replaced with the Central District of Illinois in 1978.

The Central District currently has four United States District Judges and three United States Magistrate Judges. U.S. District Judges are appointed for their lifetime by the President of the U.S. and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and hold office as long as they exhibit "good behavior" according to Article III of the Constitution.
