Why use UniCourt to search for cases in the Southern District of California?

Locating the court records you need for the Southern District of California from the Public Access to Court Electronic Records, or PACER, can be overpriced, inefficient, and labor-intensive.

UniCourt gives you real-time, bulk access to the entire PACER database of civil and criminal federal court data from the California Southern District through our PACER API. UniCourt gathers court data for all of the new federal civil cases in the Southern District of California each day, and gives you the ability to search all of those new case filings in our CrowdSourced Library™ for free. Unlike UniCourt, PACER charges for every case search you make on their platform, even if your search produced no meaningful results. On top of that, PACER does not limit the cost of each case search you make, meaning you could be charged exorbitant fees for bad searches that return too many results that aren’t helpful.

Besides charging for searching cases in the California Southern District, PACER forces users to pay more fees if they want to download the same document multiple times. Not only does PACER charge to download the same document multiple times, but PACER also charges document fees of 10 cents per page, claiming that these fees are capped at $3. However, these court fees can be much higher for access to court transcripts. In contrast, if UniCourt has a document you need from S.D. Cal. in our CrowdSourced Library™, you can download it for free as many times as you’d like.

In addition to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, UniCourt gives you access to court records for all of the other U.S. District Courts in California, including the Northern District of California, the Eastern District of California, and the Central District of California. UniCourt also provides you with bulk access to all federal court records within California, such as cases filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit at the James R. Browning U.S. Courthouse and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California. Beyond federal court records across the State of California, UniCourt further provides you with access to California state court records for San Diego County.

UniCourt’s industry-leading Legal Data APIs provide Enterprise users with on-demand, bulk access to structured data from California state and federal courts. UniCourt collects, organizes, standardizes, and normalizes court data from all federal courts and makes it easily accessible via our APIs as a part of our Legal Data as a Service (LDaaS) offerings for business development, competitive intelligence, litigation strategy, and process automation.
