About the Eastern District of California

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California has jurisdiction over thirty-four counties in California. The Eastern District encompasses the largest geographical area of the four districts in California. It stretches from the Oregon border in the north to the Tehachapis in the south, and from the Coastal Range in the west to the Nevada Border in the east, and it also encompasses Yosemite National Park.

The Eastern District currently has nine United States District Judges and fourteen United States Magistrate Judges. The Eastern District is divided into the following two divisions: the Fresno Division, which covers Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Tuolumne counties; and the Sacramento Division, which covers the remaining twenty-three counties in the Eastern District.

The E.D. Cal. has five separate courthouse locations. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District Fresno Division is located at the Robert E. Coyle U.S. Courthouse, 2500 Tulare Street, Fresno, 93721. The Robert T. Matsui United States Courthouse, 501 "I" Street, Sacramento, 95814, serves as the courthouse for the Sacramento Division of the Eastern District. Outlying magistrate judges sit in the following three courthouses: the Bakersfield Federal Courthouse, 510 19th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301; the Redding Federal Courthouse, 2986 Bechelli Ln, Redding, CA 96002; and the Yosemite Courthouse, 9004 Castle Cliffs Ct, Yosemite Valley, CA 95389.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California is Phillip A. Talbert, who previously worked as a Trial Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where he prosecuted a variety of federal criminal cases.
