As Jeff explains, collaboration not only enhances the effectiveness of KM teams, but it also enables other law firm functions like BD and marketing, IT, finance, and practice management to operate at their highest levels, further delivering recurring value to clients and accelerating firm growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here below is an excerpt from Jeff\u2019s article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within large Am Law firms, knowledge management (KM) has grown into a critical function for moving legal technology and data initiatives forward, and it acts as the connective tissue enabling collaboration between other functions, such as business development (BD) and marketing, competitive intelligence, practice management, finance, IT, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n To explore the concept of KM as a collaborative function promoting growth and progress within law firms, we talked to leaders in KM at some of the most forward-thinking firms, including Elisabeth Cappuyns<\/a>, Director of Knowledge Management at DLA Piper (US) LLP, Meghann Barloewen<\/a>, Knowledge Management Counsel & Director, Knowledge Management Projects at Littler Mendelson, P.C., Rachel Shields Williams<\/a>, Director, Knowledge Management Enablement & Insights at Sidley Austin LLP, and Rebecca Holdredge<\/a>\u200b, Director of Knowledge Management at Levenfeld Pearlstein, LLC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In this article, we\u2019ll provide insights from each of these law firm KM leaders on (1) why they think it\u2019s vital for KM to be a collaborative function, (2) the best ways KM teams can cultivate a culture of collaboration, and (3) what other essential functions their KM team collaborates with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Why It\u2019s Critical for KM to Be Collaborative<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCollaboration isn’t just important as a KM function; it’s essential for the firm\u2019s success,\u201d says Rebecca Holdredge. \u201cThe essence of KM is to coordinate and facilitate the flow of information across the firm, functioning as a central knowledge hub.\u201d In firms that don\u2019t have a collaborative KM function, Holdredge points out that \u201cinformation silos persist, hindering the flow of knowledge that is critical for a firm\u2019s operational success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most persistent types of information silos in law firms, and especially in large, global firms, are the data and analytics that only reside in lawyers\u2019 minds. As Rachel Shields Williams explains, \u201cIt’s important for knowledge management to be collaborative in a law firm because KM helps break down lawyer experience into structured pieces of information. KM takes out the knowledge and experience in lawyers\u2019 heads and turns it into pieces of information that then can be shuttled to other departments for pitches, proposals, pricing, staffing, and other key business functions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Similarly, from Meghann Barloewen\u2019s perspective, for law firms \u201cto benefit from the expertise and experiences of others, team members must know what others are doing and where to find what they are looking for.\u201d Barloewen notes that \u201cKM has naturally fallen into the role of connecting others because KM professionals often speak the languages of both legal and corporate. It is a natural extension that would also happen for many types of legal technology initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Though KM has gained more notoriety and visibility in recent years, Elisabeth Cappuyns highlights that \u201cKM has been a bridge between attorneys, technology, and business for a long time now, but with the rise of generative AI, that connection is even more important, as we are all learning this new functionality with its opportunities and limitations.\u201d While KM has been a collaborative bridge for quite some time in larger firms, Cappuyns finds that \u201cKM is now even more of a bridge between leadership and their vision, and the day-to-day implementation of that vision for our practicing attorneys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Collaborative KM is an integral ingredient for success within law firms.
