KMWorld<\/a> offers up the definition that \u201cKnowledge Management is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge.\u201d IBM<\/a> holds out that \u201cKnowledge management is the process of identifying, organizing, storing and disseminating information within an organization.\u201d While several other organizations and outlets have their own carefully crafted definition of what knowledge management is, at its roots, knowledge management is either a unifying or destructive force between functions and groups within organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Without a well-designed and implemented knowledge management strategy, key stakeholders won\u2019t get the right information, in the right format, at the right time to make mission critical decisions; organizational data will remain unstructured and unusable, leading to missed opportunities and inaccurate reporting; and data silos will remain islands of information, incapable of fostering much needed communication to move companies forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the context of using court data, many of the inherent problems knowledge management seeks to solve are magnified and made worse. Court data is notoriously messy and riddled with spelling errors, contains multitudes of variations of names for similar entities like attorneys, law firms, judges, and parties involved in litigation, and is generally unstructured and lacking in standards or classifications. These problems then rapidly escalate when seeking to use data across jurisdictions. The differences between court data from state courts and federal courts alone presents a vexing problem for knowledge management professionals, not to mention the challenges of comparing apples to apples between different counties and jurisdictions within the same state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With this as the backdrop, UniCourt\u2019s central mission is to make court data more accessible and useful.
