{"id":3230,"date":"2021-03-08T05:53:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T13:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/be.unicourt.internal:9878\/site-blog\/?p=3230"},"modified":"2021-12-23T23:10:11","modified_gmt":"2021-12-24T07:10:11","slug":"international-womens-day-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/international-womens-day-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"International Women\u2019s Day \u2013 Choose to Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 2021 theme for International Women\u2019 Day is #ChooseToChallenge, and as part of this theme we\u2019re reminded that \u201cfrom challenge comes change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From challenging gender parity in law firms, to challenging the lack of funding for women in the legal tech space, to challenging inequalities inherent in the justice system, choosing to challenge what is and has been the status quo is necessary to see change in the legal industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, we looked at gender equality as a business issue in law and how the <a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/international-womens-day-celebrating-each-for-equal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#EachForEqual<\/a> theme spoke to the need for championing and celebrating the role of women in the workplace and beyond. Now, we are turning to highlight the women in law and legal tech who have made the choice to challenge the norms and traditions of the legal profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Influencers Choosing to Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last year, we\u2019ve been fortunate enough to sit down and hear from several women through our UniCourt Influencer Q&amp;A series who are making significant strides in their own respective segments of the legal industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women we interviewed represent leaders in legal tech, knowledge management, legal consumer advocacy, and court reform, and we are happy to share with you some of their insightful words of wisdom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/JSmPYwgJZNNx_EWLDG5fDhPNdaglMh0Q5GeoAFDx9NYQxM3Q7JBE6LPPQXTkY-cSgVz_thRoWX5xik6HF9DvvPqQkCG0OchkuZm5n-AbxFTiZtk97eY-KibotcyWvyiEaOvrfjM\" alt=\"Sonja Ebron, CEO and Co-Founder of Courtroom5\" width=\"868\" height=\"579\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/qa-with-sonja-ebron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sonja Ebron, CEO and Co-Founder of Courtroom5<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy advice for anyone who wants to work in legal tech is the same, regardless of gender. And that is, if you see something broken that you can help fix, accept the obligation to help fix it. Brokenness is not hard to find in the justice system, so you don\u2019t have to look hard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For women in particular, we should strive to remember that we are socialized to understate our accomplishments and our capabilities. So often when women are looking for partners and funding to fix something, we fail to correct for that socialization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To succeed, we have to think more boldly and express ourselves more boldly than our gender training allows. That training forces us to assume we can do more than we think we can, because in reality, we usually can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ra1Bynx-ysBoQIiMLwrmAWLFUGmemw7MolY_U5YUO1kvUmjoLOEkJI6XhF7DQD6327pwjEBZfb7FlvJmRLtWuOcg_XusPGgaAwiXG2Qp3XPwhRecqZuad25qO8ogYi8yFdQILUs\" alt=\"Amanda Brown, Executive Director of Lagniappe Law Lab\" width=\"868\" height=\"579\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/qa-with-amanda-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amanda Brown, Executive Director of Lagniappe Law Lab<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI truly think 2021 has the capacity to be one of the biggest years for access to justice yet. COVID-19 exposed the deficiencies in our system\u2019s technology abilities, and a scramble to implement technology exposed the deficiencies in the system overall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brought a lot of players to the table that previously played the role of active impeder or tacit endorser of access to justice efforts. It seems like we may finally have an audience that\u2019s not just willing to listen to what we have to say, but also help us execute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I guess what I\u2019m trying to say is that the biggest victory of 2021 wouldn\u2019t be more technology, more service innovations, or even more regulatory reform experiments across the country. Instead, the real prize is a truly collaborative justice system. From there, I have confidence that things that are genuinely in the best interest of justice will have a fighting chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ItU-0QgcEAaz_cI3NcVfOn6Jjbl_2XQGHfoOLQUb0SoJgaQvye01SVOFh3zlMAKV8oryeIJZC3kLtk1P8N1xmGwTTyNlhJt2dkJTwLorPWtQKMhJTdaXN8rK8a0BVaWo9Qq7HSo\" alt=\"Jean O\u2019Grady, Editor of Dewey B Strategic\" width=\"868\" height=\"579\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/qa-with-jean-ogrady\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean O\u2019Grady, Editor of Dewey B Strategic<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI became a blogger because most of the legal tech bloggers were men and librarians weren\u2019t getting the credit they deserved for driving innovation in law firms. So that was a key mission of Dewey B Strategic \u2013 which is a play on words using the name of the founder of American Librarianship, Melville Dewey, and asking are we strategic? (and my answer is a resounding \u201cyes\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in my career I heard the phrase: \u201cSometimes it\u2019s better to seek forgiveness than permission.\u201d In my first library director position, I found myself in a situation where there was an opportunity to transition away from \u201cdumb\u201d dedicated research terminals (Lexis Ubiq and Westlaw Walt) and replace them with IBM PCs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PCs would allow us to add workflow software and a wider range of research platforms. The Director of IT refused to approve the PCs so I went above him. He was furious with me for a few months, but he later admitted that I had made the right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/mzDEr_v7YKqjgbN_c3GbkkMcKeIc_ii1Higg3gNzyMw1PS32cBQ1yS-xl6O36dqPHwexwCMS4OZVF3SrrlQExhcq3zjX_fa0C3Vze0rXaNRqZOi51JJW2sT-WoasSoDyvQzCDoY\" alt=\"Natalie Anne Knowlton, Director of Special Projects for IAALS\" width=\"868\" height=\"579\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/qa-with-natalie-anne-knowlton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natalie Anne Knowlton, Director of Special Projects for IAALS<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the risk of waxing poetic about American history, I\u2019d suggest that the system is working for the consumers for whom it was initially built\u2014that\u2019s just not most of the country today. I recently published a piece through<a href=\"https:\/\/iaals.du.edu\/blog\/expert-opinion-trusting-public-s-perception-our-justice-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> IAALS\u2019 Blog<\/a>, where I talk about the reality that the system was erected when African Americans were considered property and women had few rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s possible to divorce this historical reality from the contours of our current access to justice crisis. The system just wasn\u2019t built for many of the people who need it today. And while the justice system is fair and impartial in theory, we know these ideals have yet to be enforced in practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I raise all this to suggest that we have some serious systemic issues to grapple with if we are going to meaningfully address the <a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/closing-the-access-to-justice-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A2J gap<\/a>, including radical system redesign involving far more diverse leaders than we have in the industry now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/0oLauf9Zlobs5QqB67NZS18p72mwrLEed-mVgadZbV5z9pDcPCPhJSIFonj7YYMincl3iOj7eAcp4NVArW5AFku7rCbDxuybFBGWrLuO5BBYeoC2KEehjHrg43AxvDe-iL7aZho\" alt=\"Shannon Salter, Chair of the Civil Resolution Tribunal\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unicourt.com\/blog\/unicourt-influencer-qa-with-shannon-salter-of-the-civil-resolution-tribunal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shannon Salter, Chair of the Civil Resolution Tribunal<\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are creative, committed, and curious, it doesn\u2019t take much technology or infrastructure for courts and tribunals to make significant changes in the lives of everyday people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always encourage courts, tribunals, and other justice system actors to start tomorrow. Start by asking questions of the people you serve. Start user testing forms and processes. Become as curious and as humble as possible about the answers and results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest impediment to reforming the civil justice system is cultural, not logistical. If we adopt a relentless curiosity about how we could design better systems, there is a tremendous potential to make radical change for the better, using many of the tools and resources we already have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Being the Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing to challenge often requires being the change, setting the tone, and moving the conversation forward with action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s challenging gender parity head on in the legal industry or gender inequalities common across industries when it comes to lack of access to capital for diverse startups, \u201c[i]t\u2019s really important to walk the walk,\u201d says <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lawsitesblog.com\/2021\/03\/paladin-cofounder-partners-in-new-venture-fund-to-support-diverse-startups.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kristen Sonday, Co-Founder and COO of justice tech company Paladin<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To change the equation and provide opportunities for diverse startups to get access to early stage capital, Sonday, along with five other partners, launched the venture fund <a href=\"https:\/\/longjump.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LongJump<\/a>, a first-check venture fund focused on investing in underrepresented ideas and founders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the opening line of her <a href=\"https:\/\/kristensonday.medium.com\/why-im-co-founding-longjump-vc-42b49d91a985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announcement for LongJump<\/a>, Sonday recounts that \u201c[a]s a Latina founder of a social impact company, raising VC money hasn\u2019t exactly been easy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For areas without the same level of access to early stage capital as the coasts, she explains that there&#8217;s an \u201coversized impact on underrepresented founders\u2019 ability to get their startups off the ground\u201d that perpetuates the cycle of lack of access to capital by \u201cskewing survivorship bias and greatly affecting what \u2018success\u2019 looks like.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though LongJump won\u2019t focus on any specific industries, Sonday shared with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawsitesblog.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bob Ambrogi<\/a> that \u201cshe hopes that legal tech and justice tech companies will apply\u201d and that LongJump\u2019s model \u201cinspires others in legal to up their commitment to diverse and female founders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a continuous and growing need for change, and change agents, in the legal industry to see progress for gender inclusivity in terms of access to capital, partnership and title promotions, speaking opportunities, and so much more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we\u2019re confronted with injustice, when we see things that are broken (or that are working the way they were designed to diminish diversity), the International Women\u2019s Day theme reminds us of the choices we can make to be the change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.&nbsp;<\/li><li>We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women&#8217;s achievements.&nbsp;<\/li><li>We can all help create an inclusive world.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To celebrate International Women\u2019s Day this year, UniCourt is highlighting women in law and legal technology who choose to challenge the status quo in the legal industry. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":3257,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[79,49,8],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>International Women\u2019s Day \u2013 Choose to Challenge &#8211;
